Being in the Band

Everybody wants to be a part of something big nowadays, and being in the Doherty Spartan Marching Band is something that you will remember for the rest of your life. Something you can look back on and say, “I helped make that band what it is today!” Band is more of a calling than people realize; it tests your skill, stamina, strength, and courage to perform the best you possibly can during competition. Most of the times in practice everybody isn’t giving their best because they’re bored, or just have had a long day at school. This all changes after our first competition, when all the freshmen get chills down their spine, when they realize this isn’t practice; it’s the first time they are judged in front of a live crowd. This feeling is far beyond words; even seniors in the band still can go back to that moment when they started this journey to a life changing experience. The band truly is the pride of Doherty High School because it is made up of the most committed and spirited teenagers that have become much more than young adults...they have become an individual.

2007 Band Camp. A whole new world for Freshman!..

This summer I came into the Pride of Doherty Marching Band as a rookie and a freshman. Right on the first day of rookie camp way back in May, I could tell that this was going to be an experience that I would remember. On the first day I and the other rookies/freshmen had to learn all of the basic marching commands and all the stretches and other exercises that the band does. Through out the week we learned all of the marching commands, like a fast-break and an oblique. We also learned that the band is basically a big family of high school students that all know each other and has been through many difficult times, such as standing at attention for five minutes at Homecoming. At the end of Rookie Camp I was excited for summer to really start, but then I remembered that I had to go back to band camp at the end of July.
Just when I thought that the hard hours of marching was over for the summer, I went back to Doherty for the two weeks of Band Camp. This was even more overwhelming with all of the upper classmen around me and the pressure to do better. Throughout those two weeks it became easier and easier to march, and I met new people that I probably would have never met if I had not gone to Band Camp. When I got drill for the first time it was a big relief. I thought it was going to be more marching around and commands being yelled out at us, but it wasn’t. After I learned the song 1 drill and pass off the song 1 music, I was amazed to hear that we were ahead of schedule. After those two weeks of Band Camp I can not wait for the real season to start and to march in my first football game!
