Additional New Sky Sox Stand Rules

We do have a couple of changes from Diamond Concessions as well. As always, there is no free food. In addition to that they have given more clear guidelines as to where and when we can eat and take breaks. There is to be no food eaten inside the stand and if you need to take a break, you must first verify that it is okay to do so. The only people who are able to let you know if you can take a break are Diane Chapman- our stand manager (a Diamond Concessions Employee) or myself if I am working. If you are eating, we have been asked to sit in one of the top two rows of the bleachers (seating permitting) to eat but under no circumstances are we to eat inside the stand, and if you are eating in the stand, you must remove your apron, and wear a jacket or something to cover your uniform.

ABSOLUTELY NO CELL PHONE USE INSIDE THE STAND
I understand that we all use cell phones to stay in touch with our kids, and to make sure that the house is not burning down in our absence. Adults will be able to keep their cell phones with them in the stand, but it must be on vibrate and cannot be checked while you are in the front of the stand. If necessary, please ask Diane or myself if you can step away to return a call.
Students will not be allowed to have their cell phones in the stand with them while they are working. There will be an designated cell phone storage space, and all cell phones will be returned to the students when they leave for the night.

Registers & Cleaning Assignments:
In the past, it has been a little confusing if an adult was working in a student slot.
If you are on the calendar in a student slot, you will be expected to do the student job- making food orders and filling soft drinks.
If you are in an adult spot you will be expected to run the register and fill beer orders.

IF YOU ARE ON A REGISTER DO NOT TOUCH FOOD WITHOUT FIRST WASHING YOUR HANDS

Diane will assign cleaning tasks to students at the beginning of the shift to avoid the issue of the same students mopping and doing the heavy work every time they work as we have seen in the past. If you are a minor and you are leaving before the stand is closed, you will be given a cleaning assignment that is to be completed before you leave the stand.
Diane is our boss...she does not behave like a boss and has been very understanding with us. So when she asks you to do something, it should be done immediately
If there are problems, concerns, issues, questions:  these need to be brought to my attention IMMEDIATELY via email or voicemail. I am still working 60 hours or more per week but I am very proactive when it comes to checking my email and my voicemail. If you are concerned, odds are someone else is concerned as well.

Most of all, have fun. This really is a great way to get to know other band students and parents and to make a little money to help with your student's fees at the same time.

Thank you,
Wanda Patterson

Proposed changes to sky sox fundraiser/sign up procedure

Due to the anticipated increased interest in participation in the Sky Sox fundraiser for summer 2010, there is a need to amend the process for sign up and participation in the Sky Sox fundraiser.

The proposed changes are as follows:

  • Only students enrolled in the DHS band program may participate in this fundraiser. This is to allow more openings for those who will be working to earn the funds necessary for the Hawaii trip in the spring of 2011
  • Initial sign up order will be determined by raffle.
    • Each student enrolled in the program interested in participating in the Sky Sox fundraiser this summer will be entered into a drawing.
    • The sign up order will be determined by the order in which student names are drawn
    • When a student’s name is drawn, a total of 10 slots may be signed up in any combination of parent/student slots but only a total of 10 per student enrolled may be initially requested.
    • The names of interested students must be submitted prior to the February parent meeting on 2/4
    • The drawing will be completed at the parent meeting on 2/4 and families who have submitted their names must either be in attendance to sign up for their desired dates or have provided a list of requested dates to Wanda Patterson prior to 2/4. If parents are not present at the meeting and no dates have been submitted, this student’s name will be skipped and will be placed in the second round drawing.
  • Second round sign up will be handled in the same manner as initial sign up
    • Families who did not submit their names by 2/4 will be allowed to add their names to the list before the second drawing with a list of desired dates. However if the dates you request are taken before your turn in the rotation comes, those dates will not be entered in the calendar.
    • Second round drawing will be completed on 2/11 (The following Thursday) and an email with the order will be sent to all participating families. Dates will be submitted and entered into the calendar for each response received in the order that the names were drawn and confirmation email to all families of the dates awarded will be sent upon completion of the calendar.
  • After second round is drawn, the remaining available dates will be opened up to all interested band students and parents and filled on a first come first served basis. ***This may be changed to a third round drawing depending upon expressed interest and our ability to communicate the fundraiser and sign up process to the middle schools in a timely manner***

Some additional items to be addressed:

If your student is under 16 years old:

Before you will be allowed to put your student on the calendar to volunteer, you MUST provide the acknowledgement of the labor laws and requirements form completed by the parent (See attachments, "Parent  and Student Ack of Labor Laws" and "Summary of Child Labor Laws") These forms will also be available at the parent meeting if you have trouble downloading them.) Students who are under the age of 16 CANNOT sign up for shifts in April, May or September due to labor law restrictions and NO MORE THAN 2 students under 16 can work the same shift.

You must provide documentation of your child’s age and he/she must be at least 14 by the dates he/she is signed up to work in order to participate. (Work Permits WILL NOT be available at the parent meeting. You must have your student obtain this from the school office.) However, if you submitted the work permit last year for your student, you will only need to provide a new parent acknowledgement for 2010.

Parents must have a volunteer form on file with D-11 before participating in the fundraiser. If you have volunteered before in a different capacity or through Sky Sox in the past, you need not complete another form. ("See Attachment D-11 Volunteer Form")

If you have signed up for a slot and later find that you cannot meet that commitment:

Step one: contact Wanda Patterson to advise that you are unable to work this date AS SOON AS YOU BECOME AWARE OF A CONFLICT

Step two: An email will be sent requesting volunteers to fill the vacated slots

Step Three: If another BAND MEMBER OR BAND MEMBER PARENT cannot be found to fill the vacated slots and the party(ies) unable to fill the vacant slots have another family member, friend, etc available to fill them, we will THEN accept someone not directly associated with the program to fill in.

Please note that if you vacate a slot that you signed up for in the first or second round drawings, you WILL NOT be afforded your choice of additional slots. Those will still be on a first come first served basis.

If you have questions or concerns regarding the new sign up process, please contact me directly or Mr. Williams to address them. If there is an issue it cannot be addressed if is not brought to the attention of the appropriate people.

I understand that these changes may take some getting used to and they also require some advance planning on the part of us as parents in regards to summer plans, however in order to ensure that everyone has an equal shot at the slots and to ensure that I am not pulling my hair out as the schedule dates approach, this is a necessary change. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Sincerely,

Wanda Patterson
